12 Sep Cheddar Bay Biscuits & Gravy Bake
If biscuits and gravy are your kind of comfort food, this Cheddar Bay Biscuit and Gravy Bake is one you need to try!
This recipe takes classic creamy sausage gravy and tops it with cheesy, garlicky Cheddar Bay biscuits. Everything bakes together in one dish until the gravy is hot and bubbly and those biscuits are golden brown on top.
It’s warm, filling, and—most importantly—easy!
This would be such a good weekend breakfast or brunch, but I’m also completely on board with biscuits and gravy for dinner. Add some scrambled eggs and fresh fruit on the side, and you have an easy meal the whole family can dig into.
Why You’ll Love This Biscuit and Gravy Casserole
I love recipes that take something familiar and give it a simple little twist. Instead of making regular biscuits to go with sausage gravy, we’re using a box of Cheddar Bay Biscuit Mix.
You still get that creamy, peppery sausage gravy underneath, but the cheesy garlic biscuits make this casserole extra good.
And because the biscuits bake right on top of the gravy, there’s no need to bake a separate pan of biscuits.
Cheddar Bay Biscuit and Gravy Bake Recipe
Ingredients
For the Sausage Gravy
- 1 pound breakfast sausage
- 3 tablespoons butter
- ½ cup all-purpose flour
- 4 cups milk, plus more if needed
- Salt, to taste
- Plenty of black pepper
For the Biscuit Topping
- 1 box Cheddar Bay Biscuit Mix
- Ingredients called for on the box
- Garlic seasoning packet included with the biscuit mix
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 400°F.
- Cook the breakfast sausage in a large skillet over medium heat until browned and completely cooked through. If you have an excessive amount of grease, you can drain a little off.
- Add 3 tablespoons of butter to the cooked sausage. Once the butter has melted, stir in ½ cup of flour.
- Cook the sausage and flour mixture over medium heat for about 3 minutes, stirring frequently.
- Slowly pour in 4 cups of milk, stirring or whisking as you add it.
- Season the gravy with a little salt and plenty of black pepper. Continue cooking for about 5–10 minutes, stirring frequently, until the gravy is smooth and begins to thicken.
- If your gravy gets thicker than you like, slowly stir in a little additional milk.
- Prepare the Cheddar Bay Biscuit dough according to the directions on the box. Mix the included garlic seasoning packet into the biscuit dough.
- Pour the sausage gravy into an 8×10-inch baking dish, large pie dish, or slightly larger casserole dish.
- Drop scoops of the prepared Cheddar Bay biscuit dough evenly over the sausage gravy.
- Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 25 minutes.
- Remove the foil and continue baking for approximately 15 minutes, or until the biscuits are cooked through and beautifully golden on top.
- Let the casserole rest for about 5 minutes, then scoop and serve while everything is warm.
A Few Easy Tips
Don’t make your sausage gravy too thick before it goes into the oven. The biscuits will soak up some of that creamy gravy while they bake. If your gravy looks really thick in the skillet, add another splash of milk.
Make sure you also give the flour a couple of minutes to cook with the sausage and butter before adding your milk. This helps get rid of that raw flour taste and gives you a smooth, creamy gravy.
And don’t forget the black pepper! A good sausage gravy needs plenty of it.
What to Serve With Cheddar Bay Biscuit and Gravy Bake
Because this casserole is pretty hearty on its own, I like keeping the sides simple. Serve it with scrambled eggs, fresh berries or fruit, sliced tomatoes, or even a simple fruit salad.
For a bigger brunch, you could put it out with eggs, bacon, fresh fruit, and coffee and let everyone help themselves.
